Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Explore How Medication Can Help Fight Addiction

Opioid addiction is a serious problem in North America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly a half-million people have died from an overdose involving an opioid from 1999 to 2018. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, you’re not alone in the fight. Healthcare professionals across the country have been working to develop new physical, chemical and psychological tools to help those people fight opioid addiction. One of those tools is medication assisted treatment (MAT).

How Medicated-Assisted Treatment Helps Combat Addiction

Medication-assisted treatment combats substance use disorders with a combination of behavioral therapy and medications. Some of the medications we leverage in the MAT process at New Life are Vivitrol®, suboxone and naltrexone.

The process of weaning off a substance can be extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. MAT helps combat the withdrawal symptoms and can drastically reduce psychological cravings. When used in a safe environment, MAT has been shown to have no negative effects on physical functions, intelligence, mental capability or employability.
